New Beginnings!

New beginnings can be such a blessing. The first week of parenthood was such a magical time. My husband took two weeks of vacation time to be with me and the baby after the delivery. I’m so glad to have had his help to figure out everything while my body is still healing. We also worked on breastfeeding while my son and I figured out which hold felt the best. Not only was it nice to have my husband home with me but my mother and sister stopped by on almost daily basis the first week. My sister brought over several gluten-free vegan dishes so I had a variety of things to eat. This first week also brought visits from close family and friends. This first week also helped to be extremely present in the moment. I honestly couldn’t worry about what was going to happen the next day. I couldn’t ever think what’s going to happen a few hours from that time. Everyone gave us the advice sleep when the baby sleeps. Sometimes this worked out but sometimes I just want to hold my baby and gaze into his beautiful face. Several nights ago when I was nursing at 2 a.m. the baby drifted off to sleep while breastfeeding. I’m not a huge 80’s music fan but I just kept hearing the lyrics similar to the song Heaven by Bryan Adams. I kept hearing, “your loving is all that I want and I found it there in your arms. Isn’t that hard to believe, we’re in heaven.” Holding my baby is so important and I know he will not always be this small.

By the start of the the second week of my husband’s vacation time, we had figured out breastfeeding a little bit better. Less people visited, but I was feeling better everyday. My sister cooked us more delicious food and we were even able to squeeze in some episodes of Stargate SG-1! One of my friends told me she couldn’t watch that show with her baby because there were too many explosions and gunfire. Since we reached the first 8 seasons while I was pregnant with my son, he naps right through the fight scenes like any other white noise. My son loves naps and I love cuddling him when he naps! For now, he sleeps much better on Nathan and me than if we put him down elsewhere to nap. We have a napper in the Pack ‘n’ Play, a Rock ‘n’ Play and a Swing. So many choices, but so far he still prefers mom and dad. He won’t be this little so the dishes and laundry can wait for now.  I am so grateful that my son and I were both healthy after the delivery.
