In a seated position, close your eyes and start deep breathing to gentle music. Having your eyes closed helps to shut out the external visual stimulation of the world and helps you to delve more deeply into your internal world. You can cover your eyes with your hands if you would like. Breathe in slowly then exhale slowly, inhaling and exhaling to the count of ten. Truly fill your lungs so much that it makes your abdominal area distend. If you would like, you can try placing your hands on your rib cage or your belly. The feedback on your hands can help to keep your mind focused on breathing. Breathe in and out to the count of ten several times. What do you see when you close your eyes? Do you see any colors? If so, what do you believe is the purpose behind the color you are being shown. Do the colors represent the chakras to you or do you have other strong associations? You continue this meditation as long as you like and you can stop the meditation once it feels complete.
Crown Chakra Experience
I first did this type of meditation when I was in massage class during college. Our instructor wanted us to see if we could see any colors. Honestly, at first… I saw only the back of my eyelids in our sun filled classroom. I told my instructor I saw red and beige which I was pretty sure were just my eyelids. The instructor smiled gently and told me to try again, but this time with my hands over my eyes. With the external stimuli blocked out, all I saw was blackness at first, but soon, I also saw red in the center of the blackness. Excitedly, I told my instructor that I saw red. I knew that red was definitely not from the sunlight, because I had completely blocked it out. My instructor grinned, saying “Good. Again.” I tried again and this time the spot of red took up more of my internal vision. At the time, I didn’t really know what the colors meant, if anything, but other massage students where seeing more than one color and I also wanted to experience it.
I wanted to try again, one last time, and I prayed to God to see another color besides red. After my prayer, I closed my eyes again and my vision started black, but instead of seeing red, as before, I saw violet. I told my instructor that I saw the color violet. She contemplatively replied, “That’s rare for the first time. Only one other student today saw that too.” The other student who saw violet was a deeply spiritual woman and I knew she must have asked for God’s help during this exercise too. She had once shared with me that as a little girl, she had an experience where Jesus came to her as she slept and called her by name. Knowing what I know now about chakras, I believe our prayers had opened up the crown chakra. Violet is the color of the crown chakra, and the connection to the divine. If you try this exercise to see the colors, but do not see any colors besides black, keep trying. Seeing black represents protection and there is nothing wrong with that. I now see other colors, without having to cover my eyes with my hands. Meditation is great tool for connecting with your inner divine nature. Giving your mind the task of trying to see a color can help clear the mind chatter. While the third eye chakra deals with trusting your inner wisdom, thinking clearly and attuning to your intuitive power, the crown chakra is similar yet takes it to the next level on divine oneness.
