The Season of Love, Gratitude, and Gifts

Last year when I was Christmas shopping, I thought that it was so strange that we should all be buying presents for each other at Christmas. We are celebrating the birth of Christ… yet we are the ones who receive the gifts? Hmm… yeah, I guess it is a time of merriment and celebration. At this point, it is tradition if nothing else. Anyone that has spend some time with me might know that I love my local PBS stations. The area I live in receives the Dayton PBS station, the Cincinnati PBS station and the PBS station broadcast in Northern Kentucky! Last Christmas, I watched a Christmas special from Rick Steves, the travel author, about how the holidays are celebrated in Europe. My favorite was that in Germany they have the tradition that an angel delivers presents on behalf of baby Jesus. I like that idea better than the commerized version that Santa Claus has become in the United States. I also liked the St. Lucia traditions Rick Steves presents in his special, but I don’t want to give too much away so watch the special if you are interested.

In December 2014, I saw the holiday special on TLC called “The Secret Santa” and I loved it! I still have it on my TiVo so my mom and sister can see it (if they ever make the time to watch it). The special talked about St. Nicholas and it was such an uplifting 2 hours. I don’t normally even watch anything on the TLC station, but I happened to be staying with my grandmother when she was recuperating after a hospital stay when it came on the tv. Afterward, I called Nathan and asked him to record it on our TiVo the next time it aired! I don’t want to say anymore about that special though, because… spoilers! I love holiday specials, but I tend to only make time for a few. This year I watched “The Muppet Christmas Carol” twice so I could get all of my gifts wrapped. Since I have not seen “Eight Crazy Nights” yet, my husband suggested we watch that this year too. Although it was difficult to watch at times (one of the characters was so mean), I like how it ended.

The true meaning of this season is having a loving and grateful heart. I have an appreciation of the message from the song “It feels like Christmas” from Muppet Christmas Carol. Below is the chorus where it talks about love, caring, spirit, and making this time of the heart last all year! I love it. Even further below is the clip of the song for anyone not familiar with the movie.

“It is the season of the heart
A special time of caring
The ways of love made clear
It is the season of the spirit
The message if we hear it
Is make it last all year”

I hope those who celebrated Christmas had a great holiday and I hope all of those celebrating Hanukkah or Kwanzaa are enjoying their celebrations! This is a great time of year and I am grateful. I would count my blessings in writing, but that would make this post way too long. I hope you are able to count your blessings. Yesterday was such as warm day, I was able to open all the windows and let fresh air into the house. Talk about a strange blessing, but I am still grateful for the lovely day. Peace and love to you all!
